Seed Details:
Daikon is derived from two Japanese words dai (meaning large) and long-term (meaning root). Roots are much larger than traditional radish and will range from 2 to 4 inches in diameter and 6 to 20 (that's right 20 inches)long. They develop in 3 different shapes. Cylindrical, Spherical, Oblong. Also known as icicle radish, white radish and mooli, in Britain. It is a companion plant to Chervil, cress, lettuce, leeks, tomatoes, spinach and even strawberries.
Instructions:
Direct Sow 2 to 4 cm deep. Be sure the area selected is a deep bed or planting area and keep soil evenly moist for smooth and even growth. Careful when digging out. Plants may be brittle. The roots can be clean and stored for several weeks if lifted, leaves are removed and kept in a dry, dark and cool location. Moisture free is the key to long-term storage with many root vegetables.
History:
This ancient root vegetable is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean. About 500 B.C it was brought to China & Japan to begin further cultivation.
Historic Uses:
Daikon radish is extremely popular in Asian dishes. Its low in calories, high in vitamin C. Adding rice bran or cooking in rice water will keep the radishes fresh flavour and clean white colour.
