Seed Details
Goji berry (aka Wolf berry) has upright, long lateral branches with a eye catching weeping habit that add interest and delicious snacks to your landscape. Do not prune a Goji berry plant in the first year. In Goji berries second year, choose a main shoot and prune all others below it about 15” from the ground. When the plant reaches 2 feet tall in the summer, it is advised to pinch out the growing tips to cause side branching where the fruit will be formed. During the dormant season you should also prune your Goji berry by removing any damaged, crossing or weak branches. Shorten all lateral branches by cutting back from the tip by 7 to 15 inches.
Instructions
When starting Goji berry from seed it is advised to soak seeds overnight in warm water (23 to 26 C). The seeds are very small and success is found by using a very fine soil mix that includes sand. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and it is recommended to sow about 3 - 4 seeds per pot. Keep soil moist until seeds sprout. Separate and transplant in a full sun location when the third true leaves have appeared. If started indoors be sure to harden off your seedlings to avoid transplant shock. Transplant out after all chance of frost has passed. Goji berries grow sweeter as they mature on the plant. Goji berry is self pollinating, so even a single plant will produce fruit. Goji berries dislike fertilizers of all kinds, so avoid the temptation to feed it. Many people who live in cooler climates grow their Goji berry in large pots so if expecting a particularly cold winter, it is easy to move the plant to a cool frost free location such as a garage.
