Seed Details

Giant Atlantic pumpkin is definitely note worthy in size. They are generally grown for competition or an epic Halloween decoration that will catch the eyes of trick or treaters and parents alike. Giant Atlantic pumpkin is not a great source of meat for baking though. If you are looking for the meat to bake you may wish to grow another variety we carry called Big Max pumpkin. Big Max is slightly smaller in size than Giant Atlantic but you will enough meat for all your baking needs. However, we do encourage those growing for competition or just for Halloween Pumpkins to give Giant Atlantic a try. Your kids will get a kick out of the size. Giant Atlantic pumpkin also provides more surface area for your carving needs. We posted an image of ours from last season. She was 125lbs and big enough to place a small carved watermelon in her mouth. It was a huge hit

Instructions

Easy and fun to grow with these instructions. Direct sow or transplant in late spring when soil warms up. If transplanting, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks after the last frost date Germination is 6 - 15 days. Pumpkins do not transplant well so using a peat pot is encouraged. The peat pot breaks down in the soil. Once the plant is established it is recommended that you hill around root base and bury tendrils in moist soil to encourage strength and nutrients while feeding the pumpkin's growth. It is also recommended to feed weekly throughout the growing season with fish or kelp based fertilizer. Keep well watered but not consistently wet. As a rule all pumpkins grow male flowers first, then the female flowers follow. The female flowers can be identified as they have tiny fruits at the base of the petals and require pollination by bees or by hand. For best results choose the healthiest fruit forming and remove all other female flowers that follow to ensure there is only one fruit per plant. This practice ensures that all the nutrients feed the lone pumpkin and encourage its optimal health and size. Consider placing a board beneath the fruit while it is developing to assist you in shifting the pumpkin as it grows so it keeps a round shape.

Pumpkins are laden with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Consuming pumpkin is great for maintaining a healthy immune system and has low caloric content which lends itself to a weight-loss-friendly food.

Unusually large pumpkin cultivars have been sold since at least 1834, when records show that the Mammoth variety was first introduced. The Atlantic Giant cultivar produced by Howard Dill are thought to come from selective breeding of the cultivar Mammoth. Atlantic Giant took 30 years for the Nova Scotia farmer and pumpkin breeder Howard Dill (1934-2008) to perfect his 'Dill's Atlantic Giant' pumpkin. In 1978, Howard broke a 75-year-old record with his giant 438.5-pound pumpkin. The seeds you will be purchasing came from a pumpkin that weighed 125 pounds

I’ve purchased seeds from this company twice and both transactions were pleasant. I really loved the diversity and quality of the various seeds sold. My first purchase was three varieties of cherry tomatoes, lime basil, speckled lettuce, kale, French radish, cilantro and parsley. I called today and had an amazing 25 minute conversation about what seeds could work for my balcony garden as it transitions into fall. They are very knowledgeable, passionate and kind. I wouldn’t hesitate to refer friends or family to this small business as my preference is to shop local. I will be purchasing through them going forward as they were helpful and the quality of seeds are great.

I went a bit crazy this year and ordered seeds from large and small companies all over Canada. The Brother Nature website is enjoyable to browse, and I like how the seeds can be viewed by weather and light conditions, and perennials by hardiness zone. I feel that their prices, shipping offer, and the seed quantities are very reasonable. My Brother Nature order arrived in good time right along with the other seed orders placed at the same time, and their packaging was simple and environmentally-friendly.

I buy more and more seeds from Brother Nature each year! They offer excellent quality seeds, competitive prices, and great service! I enjoy the variety of seeds they carry and their seed envelopes have more info than your regular packet, even some history/origin behind the seeds, which I find very fun and interesting. Highly recommended.
