Verona Red Radicchio is a cabbage like plant that produces dark red, open heads from 4 to 10 cm in diameter. Radicchios is noted for it culinary and visual appeal. Great for winter gardens as it withstands considerable frost. These can be a challenging crop to grow, but adopting companion planting and proper watering techniques as described is beneficial. Radicchios best companion plants are Beets, Carrots, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, Dill, Lettuce, Mustard Greens, Radish. For the best-tasting radicchio, plant in well-drained soil packed with nutrients. If you are succession sowing and plant in mid summer, provide their bed shade from hot afternoon sun. All lettuces and cabbages and root vegetable enjoy cool roots. Sow these again in late Summer for a winter crop.
Instructions
Sow after the last frost date and again in mid-summer to take advantage of the fall growing season. Sow seed 3 mm deep and 2.5 cm apart, then thin to about 30 cm apart, leaving the strongest seedlings to flourish. Seeds will germinate from 7-24°C. Red Radicchio also enjoy consistent even moisture, usually 1-2 inches per week, more if its a midsummer planting. To achieve a timely uniform germination, dry soil must be watered to maintain cool, moist conditions, that all leafy greens thrive in. Using a drip irrigation ensures even coverage and is a welcomed time saver.
