Instructions
Start seeds indoors about 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area. Plant seeds 1-2 inches deep in the soil. Space them about 2-3 inches apart. Water gently after sowing to settle the soil around the seeds. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Place the containers in a warm location with plenty of light. If natural light is limited, consider using grow lights for 12-16 hours a day. Seeds should germinate in 7-10 days. Once seedlings appear, ensure they receive adequate light to prevent them from becoming leggy. When seedlings have at least two sets of true leaves and the outdoor conditions are suitable (after the last frost), harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Transplant them into the garden or larger containers, spacing them 12-18 inches apart. You can direct sow sunflower seeds when the ground temperature matches the temperature on the package for best results. You may even consider succession sowing meaning 2 weeks after you have transplanted the seedlings, pop a seed in between the previously transplanted seedlings. This practice will lengthen the yield and bloom time.
